The Biden administration thinks of a fresh approach to the growing immigration issue.
The plan they’re considering involves making people who enter the U.S. illegally stay in Texas while they wait to be checked for asylum.
This idea is considered a way to stop the increasing number of people coming into the U.S. illegally from the southern border. Three U.S. officials who couldn’t talk about it publicly told The Los Angeles Times.
To make it work, migrants would have to stay in Texas, or maybe other states near the border, and wear GPS devices like ankle bracelets so the government can track them.
The goal is to control the flow of migrants and make sure they don’t disappear into the country before their asylum cases are decided.
Migrants would get a check to see if they can stay in the U.S. Officials are also thinking about working with local groups to find places for migrants to live while they wait.
This could help cities near the border struggling to deal with many migrants.
But only some are happy about this plan. Texas and the federal government have been arguing about what to do with migrants, including how to transport them and the Rio Grande River barriers.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott thinks Texas cities have been dealing with most of the problems caused by illegal immigration, and he wants other cities, often called “sanctuary cities,” to help out.
So, Texas has started a program to send migrants to these “sanctuary cities” like Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, and Los Angeles.
Even so, many of these cities struggle to give migrants the help they need. Democratic mayors have asked for more help from their states and the federal government.
The new plan from the Biden administration would build on the Family Expedited Removal Management (FERM) program, which puts migrant families under rules and keeps tabs on them with GPS.
It applies to those going to different cities like Baltimore, Washington, and Chicago.
This idea comes as the number of migrants at the southern border keeps increasing. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said they have sent back or removed more than 200,000 people since May.
The DHS also said they want to make it easier and safer for migrants to come to the U.S. legally and punish those who don’t use the right way.
As we watch this developing story, it’s clear that the immigration issue is still a big problem.
The new plan from the Biden administration might change how the U.S. deals with immigration, but we’ll have to wait and see if it works.
